Caring for an Injured Pet
by Sasha K
Caring for an injured pet isn’t easy for anyone. Both of my dogs have been injured in the last two weeks, one by the stairs and the other by the bed. We had to accommodate their needs until they healed. It took a lot of love and care to bring them back to health, but we did it out of love. They are both special needs dogs anyways so we’re accustomed to meeting their needs, but now we were dealing with two injured pets, thankfully not at the same time.
Darcy was injured climbing up the stairs. She doesn’t climbing one stair at a time like most dogs. She shoots up the stairs because she is scared of the stairs. Shooting up the stairs has been her routine since she was a pup. My daughter was pulling Darcy up the stair and she didn’t make it to the top of the stairs quick enough so she smashed her face into the stairs then fell back down. Being a shih tzu she doesn’t need to lose anymore of her nose.
When she came in the left side of her face was swollen. During the recovery time we feed her soft food and didn’t touch the tender area. After she healed a bit, we noticed that she lost several teeth from the accident. It took her about a week to recovery from the accident. She did lose a little weigh, but she’s gained it back. Now she’s back to her normal wiry self, but we aren’t using the stairs with her anymore.
Mason, my other dog was injured coming out from under the bed. He let out a squeal and he couldn’t move anymore. It really upset me as I blamed myself. I think he may have got his leg tangled around my heating coming out. For the rest of the day we had to pull him in the wagon down my wheelchair ramp, take him out of the wagon to do his business and put him in the wagon.
It wasn’t funny he was injured at all, but he made me laugh when he paged us for his dinner. I put his food into his rolling ball (he doesn’t use a bowl to eat) and put it in front of him like any other day. I walked into my bedroom and a little while later he was yipping again. I went in and the ball was about two feet away from him, usually he will chase after the ball. Poor dog couldn’t get his food at all. I picked up the ball and poured the remaining food in front of him. Thankfully, today he’s back to his usual barking self again.
Caring for an injured pet isn’t easy, but we did it out of love. We gave both of our dogs the same love and care they have given us since the day they walked into our lives. It took a lot of patience and time, but we've got our two crazy dogs back to causing chaos in our lives.
