Worldwide, pet parents know the value of their animals. They love them, protect them fiercely, and stay attuned to their mannerisms and behavior to see any sign of illness or malaise. Today is October 4, World Animal Day, a day first celebrated back in 1931 by ecologists in Florence, Italy. Of course, pet parents are animal lovers as well, celebrating the beauty of all animals- from the Zebra to the Jaguar, from the pet lizard to man's best friend. The world is also celebrating Saint Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of Animals. Today, Catholic and Anglican churches around the world will be blessing animals, both domesticated and not domesticated.

World Animal Day also started as a way to promote the plight of endangered species. As of today, October 4, 2011, there are 10,797 animals currently on the endangered species list. The list is broken into specification sections (continents) with the exception of the U.S. state of Hawaii, which is known as the "endangered capital of the world". Plants are also endangered; much of the endangered species in HI are plants.

In New York, SPCA International, joined with Spay Panama, spayed and neutered 1,000 animals over the course of four days in conjunction with World Animal Day. They called the venture a great success, comprised of a grant award of $22,000 and 50 volunteers and veterinarians. Spay Panama, an organization meant to curb pet overpopulation in Panama had a more alternative setup, with a mobile sterilization team that toured Panama City to visit pet owners with no way to travel to the clinics offering spay and neuter services.

So, Happy World Animal Day, readers! For more information on these organizations, log on to http://www.spaypanama.org and http://www.spcai.org/.
